Reducing our operational emissions

Having achieved our 2030 target of a 90% reduction (against a 2015 baseline) earlier than expected, we have revised our combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions reduction target with a more ambitious baseline year of 2024.

Our new target, which commenced 1 October 2025, is to reduce combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 85% by 2030 (against a 2024 baseline). For more information refer to our 2025 ESG Report.

Energy use and carbon emissions

We seek to minimise the use of resources in our operations through the efficient consumption of energy within our buildings, including commercial offices, retail branches and data centres. We also encourage staff uptake of technology such as video conferencing to reduce emissions associated with travel.

To ensure we're meeting our emission reduction goal we have adopted a framework of:

  • regularly reviewing energy consumption within our operations;
  • developing a plan to reduce energy consumption;
  • funding and implementing energy efficiency opportunities; and
  • monitoring the outcomes of energy efficiency projects.

All efforts to reduce energy consumption across our operating portfolio will assist us in reducing our emissions footprint and achieving our greenhouse gas emissions reduction Target.

Our aim is to reduce emissions where ANZ considers practical, however our residual measured operational emissions are offset. Our Australian operations first obtained a carbon-neutral certification under the Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard for Organisations in 2010. Our most recent certification obtained under the Climate Active Program was in respect of the period ending 30 June 2024. Our New Zealand operations were certified under a net Carbonzero certification through Toitū Envirocare for the first time in 2023.
