Environmental sustainability

Our vision at ANZ is to finance a sustainable transition.

Our Climate and Environment (C&E) Strategy sets out our objective to be a trusted partner for our customers, supporting them to adapt and become more resilient to a changing environment and economy. In particular, we aim to be a leading bank in supporting an effective and orderly transition for our large business customers.

How we're taking action

Climate and Environment Strategy

Our Climate and Environment Strategy outlines our vision of financing a sustainable transition, and our three core ambitions:

  • Building our capability to help customers understand climate and nature risks
  • Transitioning our lending portfolio to net-zero financed emissions
  • Supporting our customers’ transition and resilience

Supporting our customers' transition through financing

We commenced a new target on 1 April 2023 to fund and facilitate at least $100 billion by September 2030 in social and environmental activities through customer transactions and direct investments by ANZ. This includes initiatives that aim to help lower carbon emissions, protect or restore nature, increase access to affordable housing and promote financial wellbeing.

Important information about the target, including eligibility requirements, is set out in the Social and Environmental Sustainability Target Methodology.

Operational emissions

Having achieved our 2030 target of a 90% reduction (against a 2015 baseline) earlier than expected, we have revised our combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions reduction target with a more ambitious baseline year of 2024.

Our new target, which commenced 1 October 2025, is to reduce combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 85% by 2030 (against a 2024 baseline). Refer to the 2025 ESG Report for more information.

Collaborating with stakeholders to support an economy wide transition

At ANZ, we work with a range of stakeholders to enable cross-industry collaboration and thought leadership to support our Climate and Environment Strategy vision to finance a sustainable transition. One example of this is our collaboration with the Energy Efficiency Council to develop and deliver the three-part Forgotten Fuel series of reports that explore the ways in which businesses and households can benefit from using energy efficiency as a tool to supercharge emissions reduction, save money, and improve health and wellbeing.
