Make a payment within Australia

You can send money from your account to any Australian bank, building society or credit uniondisclaimer in two easy ways – using the recipient’s BSB and account number or their PayID®disclaimer (mobile number, email address or ABN). This type of payment is also known as a Pay Anyonedisclaimer payment.

If suitable, some payments are processed by a method called Osko®disclaimer and received in as little as 60 seconds, otherwise they’ll be processed within five days.

Remember, when making a payment, it’s your responsibility to ensure the details you provide are correct so be sure to double check that you have entered the recipient and amount correctly. And of course, it’s always important to stay vigilant to steer clear of scams. Learn more.

  • The bank account details you're transferring to (ie. country, SWIFT/BIC code, account number/IBAN and account name)
  • The beneficiary's address
  • Depending on the destination country of your international money transfer, you may require additional details to complete your payment. You will be prompted for the applicable details on the screen.

Log in to ANZ Internet Banking

Select Payments from the top menu, and choose International services. If it’s your first time making an international payment, you’ll be prompted to agree to terms and conditions before continuing.

Review the exchange rate and estimated fees and follow the prompts to complete the transfer.

Note: Due to fluctuating foreign exchange rates, international money transfers cannot be set for a future date or as recurring payments.

Your account will be debited once you make an international money transfer (transfer funds overseas) in Internet Banking, or once the transfer is authorised in Internet Banking for Business. Due to fluctuating exchange rates, if an Internet Banking for Business transfer is not authorised on the same day the transfer is lodged, it will expire.

The time it takes for the international payee's account to be credited will vary depending on the policy and the systems of the bank the account is held with.

Payment limits

To help protect your accounts, ANZ has limits on the amount of funds that can be paid each day. Your Customer Registration Number (CRN) has a separate payment limit for each of our digital channels: the ANZ App, Internet Banking and Phone Banking. Different limits apply for business customers using ANZ Internet Banking for Business.

About SWIFTs, BICs and IBANs

What is a SWIFT and BIC?

SWIFT stands for Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication and BIC stands for Bank Identifier Code. Together, these form an 8-11 digit code known as a SWIFT/BIC.

When setting up a payee for your international money transfer, you will need to provide a unique code to identify the receiving bank or financial institution. Depending on the destination country of your international money transfer, you will need to enter either a SWIFT/BIC, a Fedwire Branch Number or a CHIPS branch number. When you select the destination country in ANZ Internet Banking, you will be presented with the specific requirements for that country.

If you do not know the appropriate code, you can contact the person or organisation you’d like to transfer to, contact their bank or refer to their bank’s website.

If you’re receiving a payment from overseas to your ANZ account, the sender should use ANZ Australia’s SWIFT/BIC code: ANZBAU3M

What is an IBAN?

IBAN stands for International Bank Account Number. When you transfer money overseas, some countries require you to use an IBAN. Australia does not use IBANs, we use BSB and account numbers to identify accounts.

An IBAN starts with a two letter country code and contains 15–34 letters and numbers (the length will differ depending on the country of the recipient). The IBAN should be presented as a continuous string of alphanumeric characters with no spaces (eg. GB29NWBK60161331926819).

You can contact the person or organisation you’d like to transfer to, contact their bank or refer to their bank’s website. ANZ doesn’t have the authority to change an IBAN so make sure you have the right details before sending your payment.

FAQs

When you are making a payment or transferring money overseas, it is your responsibility to ensure the details you provide are correct.

  • If you enter the wrong payee (BSB, account number, PayID or BPay details) or payment amount for a domestic payment and the transaction has been processed, Message us in the ANZ App or Contact us.
  • For international money transfers, we don’t check payment details and if those details are wrong, it may result in an unsuccessful transfer or funds may go into the wrong account. Where you have entered the incorrect details or have questions about an international transaction, please contact our International Support Centre.

When you make an international payment, we will automatically include the address you have registered with ANZ for the account you are making the international transfer from.

The address needs to be correct to comply with the Australian Transaction Reports Act 1988 and the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (AML/CTF Act). In the case of accounts with more than one address, the first address listed will be used.

If an international money transfer is being made from a business account, the payee details will automatically be populated with the account holder’s details, even if the transfer has been made by another party.

Real-time exchange rates are applied in ANZ Internet Banking and fees will differ based on the transaction amount, the currency and the recipient bank/location.

You can use our Foreign exchange calculator to view the current FX rates, convert currencies and any likely fee(s) associated with your transaction.

When you enter your payment details in ANZ Internet Banking, the applicable exchange rate and fee information will be displayed for you to review before finalising the transfer. You will also see the estimated amount your beneficiary will receive after their bank's corresponding fees have been deducted.

You can view your Ongoing and One-off Payments where you’ve provided or saved your eligible Visa credit card or account details (BSB and account number). These include:

  • Recurring and/or Instalment payments set up using your Visa credit card. For example, streaming subscriptions.
  • Direct debit payments set up using your eligible transaction account (BSB & account number). For example, utility bills (water/gas bills), council rates or school fees.
  • One-off payment where you've saved your Visa credit card and account details with an app or website such as a food delivery service.

Simply log in to the ANZ App. Tap More, tap Ongoing & One-off Payments and choose your eligible account to view.

Bill payments from your ANZ Credit Card can be processed as either a purchase or cash advance. This is dependent upon how the biller is set up with the BPAY® billing service. The biller has the option of accepting a credit card as a method of payment.

  • If the biller chooses to accept, the bill payment is processed as a purchase
  • If the biller does not accept credit card payments, ANZ may allow you to make the payment from your ANZ Credit Card (if sufficient funds are available)
  • If you choose to proceed with the credit card payment, it will be processed as a cash advance, a fee may be charged and interest will accrue accordingly.

There is no charge for paying bills online. However, if you use all of your monthly free withdrawals for your accounts, normal excess transaction fees and government charges will apply.

Payments initiated via BPAY® from an ANZ Credit Card may be considered as a cash advance and therefore may incur an interest.
