Return to Work Program

Be supported to re-enter the workforce and be competitively remunerated for the value you bring.

Apply for the program

Reignite your career

ANZ's Return to Work Program is designed for people from all backgrounds who’ve taken two or more years off work, or have been significantly underemployed for that period, and would like support transitioning back into the workforce.

Launched in 2019, our program was the first of its kind in the Australian banking sector, giving people the opportunity to reignite their career in a supportive and friendly environment.

Program applications

Applications for future programs will be announced here and on our LinkedIn page.

As we’re in between programs, we recommend you explore our careers site for opportunities that may be of interest. While there you can register to receive notifications for future roles that match your interests.

The return to work opportunity

We know it can be daunting returning to work after a long break. You may be wondering about the relevance of your skills and how your flexibility needs can be accommodated.

Our Return to Work Program contains learning, mentoring and flexible work options that give you the opportunity to refresh your skills in a supportive environment and rebuild your confidence at work.

You’ll also have the support of people like Richa, Helena, Shilpa and Lizanne who’ve been in your shoes. Hear about their experiences here:

So, I was running my business up until December 2018 and I wanted to return back to a corporate job.
I think I was already looking for about two months when I first heard about this program from a friend. Flexibility was important because I was returning after a bit of a break.
I have two young children — seven and two — but in all honesty, I had my share of apprehension as well.
Whether there would be real roles like exciting roles. Whether it's just a marketing gimmick or is there actually going to be flexibility when you get into the roles?
It's been definitely amazing journey. Been here eight months, the amount of trust that we have developed, the mutual trust me for my management, and management in me, that's worked really well. I feel confident about being here and developing my career in coming years.

I was off work about two years, when I started thinking about returning to work. Really wanted to have a balance in my life and just kind of stimulate my brain a little bit again. And when you've been out of the workforce a little bit you know you've had baby brain, you know you start sort of doubting yourself and that confidence is quite low.
When I went to the marketplace for the return to work program I learnt so much about what the opportunities would be.
I felt like I was settled in after about a week. And I think part of that was due to the amazing induction program. I realised quite quickly that I’d been placed in the right team, in the right environment. The way that we work is so collaborative, that just suits me down to the ground.

I came across this return to work program from ANZ and it was like a blessing because this is the perfect program to re-enter the workforce, and it is such a noble thought by this organisation to bring back women in technology.
ANZ is no doubt one of the best places to work, and the culture here is very supportive, and there is a lot of collaboration and there is a lot of respect to my personal life. People do respect what my priorities are, so yeah, it's very good.

Moving to Melbourne, not knowing anyone, not having any family or any support in terms of childcare made the entire dynamic of looking to work potentially not even feasible. It was sort of like this ‘Aha moment!’, you know. Here’s a company with a brilliant program.
So, I currently work three days a week. That balance fits in really well with all of the responsibilities I have outside of work, so working at ANZ has really just been a blessing for me and my family.
It means that I get a break from home life. You know when you tell people you work at ANZ they immediately say ‘wow! Oh, what's that like? You know, I’ve seen the building, I’ve seen the campus you know!’
ANZ has been nothing like what I thought it would be - in a good way.
ANZ does set up the foundations to help anyone from any type of diverse spectrum to be able to apply at ANZ and succeed.

Amali, Network Engineer, Melbourne

I was so happy when they offered me the role. Not only was I given the opportunity to work for a prestigious company, but I was going back to my beloved network engineering.

The recruitment process

The Return to Work recruitment process gives you the chance to show your best qualities in a warm and appreciative environment via:

  • An online application form
  • A digital interview
  • A personality questionnaire (some questions about how you like to work)
  • An in-person interview.

An important part of the recruitment process is us getting to know about your past work experiences, your skills and motivations, and what kind of flexibility you may need.

We’d also like to know how many and what days you'd like to work and if there’s anything else you may need to make your transition back to the workforce a successful one.

What you’ll be doing

At ANZ we’re innovators, strategists, futurists, business leaders, communicators, and much more.

While some roles may require specific technical skills, like engineering and analytics, we also seek people with generalist skills and experience across areas such as sales, operations and strategy.

If you’re curious, adaptable, enjoy delivering exceptional experiences, and are interested in new business and technology trends, you could be a perfect fit for us.

FAQs

Each role will require different skills and experience levels. Ideally you’ll have at least four years of experience that relate to the skills of the role you’re applying for and an interest or passion for financial services.

Unpaid work is relevant

Identify the skills you’ve been using during your time away from the workplace that are relevant to work. These skills might have been developed or enhanced through raising your family, interacting with government agencies, caring for others, volunteer work, or hobbies.

These are your ‘transferrable skills.’ To identify these skills, write down the activities you’ve been doing recently and then list the skills you’ve been using to do them.

Examples of transferrable skills include budgeting, organising, time management, communicating ideas, trying new things, identifying opportunities, planning, prioritisiation, and bringing people together.

Once you have a list of your transferrable skills, go back and note how these skills can be used in the workplace.

Skills from your previous employment

Think about the skills you’ve developed while completing activities in your previous roles. These are your ‘job-specific skills’ which can be applicable to roles at ANZ regardless of the industry you gained them in.

Identify the skills you think you’ll need to update and make note of how the Return to Work Program could help you to refresh them.

ANZ focuses on getting the right person for the job, regardless of age. What’s important is that you have the skills and experiences most relevant to the job.

One way you can check that you’re highlighting your skills and experience clearly is to record yourself answering the two questions below. Listen / watch the recording and take notes as if you were an employer in an interview setting. Check that your desired points came across clearly.

  1. Why do you think you’re the right person for the job? (What can you offer?)
  2. What makes you stand out? (What unique skills and experience do you have? Consider mentioning your achievements also.)

Planning, cooperation, and support from others is important when returning to work after a break. Identify your current supports and then investigate any additional ones you might need to be successful in a new role.

You may need to set small, easily achievable goals when you first start back at work. As your confidence and knowledge grow, you can revise or build on them.

Think about the hours you’ll be able to manage and discuss these during the interview process. If successful, you can discuss any necessary changes you might need with your line manager.

Our Return to Work Program is most effective if you prepare in advance and tell us what you need.

Think about the kind of support you’ll need for your return and what you’ll need to deliver your best in the role. Consider:

  • the type of work that’ll suit you (full-time, part-time, permanent or fixed term contract roles)
  • how you want to structure your time (fixed hours per day versus flexible hours per day)
  • where you want to work (fully in the office or some of the time at home),

and then continue to have conversations with your line manger as you and your support networks become more comfortable with your new situation.
