ANZ Chief Executive Officer Nuno Matos says he wants to run an “energised” bank that accelerates the pace of delivery of key projects while also stepping up its risk management capabilities.
"It's about the pace. It's about the energy, the drive to get there. So the future is a very important component, but the future is today." - Nuno Matos
Speaking with bluenotes on video, Matos praised the almost decade-long tenure of his predecessor Shayne Elliott and said he appreciated the organisation Elliott left for him.
From a personal perspective, Matos said his 30-year banking career – across Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, the United States, Spain, France, Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Portugal – had taught him a lot about leadership and that he would bring this deep international experience to his role at ANZ.
Outlining his leadership beliefs, Matos said ambition was key to unlocking this success. “I like to make sure that people are able to maximise their potential and deliver great things,” adding that “Ambition is the drive.”
Matos acknowledged modern banking was not just about setting a direction but setting a speed of delivery. “It's about the pace. It's about the energy, the drive to get there. So the future is a very important component, but the future is today.”
Matos said ANZ’s mantle as the most international of all Australian banks meant it was best placed to manage current geopolitical risks. “And I, as a CEO of ANZ, I will make sure that we continue to support those customers in good times and in bad times through the (economic) cycle.”
